With over 47 years of experience as a nurse, health care administrator, clinical researcher, and faculty member, Dr. Barbara B. Brewer has been recognized nationally and internationally for her work in improving healthcare safety and quality outcomes, as well as enhancing professional practice environments.

Dr. Brewer has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and has written eight books and book chapters. Her publications have focused on the effects of nursing practice on improving patient care, treatment and outcomes, as well as nurses’ role as a partner with other health care professionals in the improvement of health care systems. She has been the PI or Co-Investigator on eight federal and privately-funded research grants, examining the effects of nursing practice on improving patient outcomes. Dr. Brewer has led several research projects evaluating Watson Caritas behaviors experienced by patients, staff (self and others), as well as staff perceptions of their leaders.

In her role as an educator, she models best practices through systems analysis and innovative systems design, using systems communications to merge inter-professional talents. Dr. Brewer has tirelessly served not only the University of Arizona, but also the nursing profession itself through organizational board and committee activities and serving as a grant reviewer. Recognizing her accomplishments, she was inducted in 2013 as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing.
