Marlienne Goldin is the Nursing Director of the Trauma and Neuro Surgical ICU, the Surgical Progressive care Unit, and the Spine Center at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro, NC. She has 37 years of experience in critical care nursing. Her journey in health care started with a stint as a volunteer EMT on her local community ambulance corps, which led to her pursuit of certification as an advanced life support paramedic. While working as a paramedic she completed an Associates Degree in Nursing from Bergen Community College Paramus, NJ, then a BSN from St. Peter’s College, Jersey City, NJ. She went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Administration with a concentration in Health Care Policy and Management from Seton Hall University, South Orange, NJ. She completed a Doctorate in Caring Science from Watson Caring Science Institute in 2017, and a Post Doctorate in Caring Science in 2018.
The first 20 years of her career were spent in the pre-hospital setting and in the emergency department. The last 15 years of her career has been spent in nursing management in critical care units. She received recognition from the Governor of NJ for Excellence in Nursing. She’s served as Faculty in the RN to BSN Program at St. Peter’s College, Englewood Cliffs, NJ and in the EMS program at Rockland Community College, Spring Valley, NY. Marlienne achieved International Certification in Human Caring and Healing from University of Colorado’s Health Science Center, School of Nursing. She was a member of the First Cohort of the Watson Caring Science Institute’s Caritas Coach Educational Program.
Her professional area of interest is applying Watson’s Theory of Human Caring, and the Caritas Processes®, in Nursing Administration as a means to improve nursing staff satisfaction and retention. She believes that her attendance at Dr. Jean Watson’s intensive classes in Boulder, CO was both personally and professionally transformational. It awakened her passion for the sacredness of nursing. One of Marlienne’s goals is to bring Caritas Consciousness to the bedside staff nurse. This is where nursing is most in need of replenishment and renewal. She has successfully applied the Caring Theory in academic settings, emergency medical services, and in critical care departments. She has presented research both nationally and internationally on the application of the Caring Theory and Caritas Processes as a means to achieve increased nursing staff satisfaction and positive patient outcomes. She is active in AONE, AACN, North Carolina Organization of Nurse Leaders and the American Holistic Nurses Association. She serves on the Board of her local chapter, Gamma Zetta, of Sigma Theta Tau International, and is on the Board of the International Association of Human Caring. Marlienne’s vision is that all health care institutions will embrace the Caring Theory and Caritas Processes as a way to improve health care.
