Come, return to the root of the root of your self.Rumi

Always, there have been the healers; those who have answered the archetypal call of the heart/soul to make the way of healing easier for people. These willing servants of Life, across time and cultures, have known that without a connection to Source, a rootedness in something larger than the personal, egoic, small self, they could not do their healing work, and survive. It was recognized that the work was itself a deep spiritual path; no less a healer than Florence Nightingale affirmed this when she said “strive to awaken the divine spirit of Love in your work.”

We, modern helpers/healers, know this intellectually and intuitively, but we often ignore it. Perhaps we never learned how to connect in this deep way, or we have rejected the beliefs and ways of our original faith traditions but haven’t found a good replacement. Or we forget, or get too busy (we think). Whatever the reason for ignoring the wisdom of our ancestors, carried deep in our bones, eventually we pay the price, physically, emotionally, spiritually, culturally. At the very least, we feel as though we are missing something, yet can’t put our finger on what that is. We simply notice a longing, but for what, we do not know. At worst, we become cold, hardened, cynical, depressed or sick, which contributes to a less-than-healing healthcare system and a culture lacking in simple kindness and compassion.

So come. Delay in this matter is not a good idea! Explore. Rest. Renew. Reconnect. Celebrate! Join a sacred circle of others who share your calling as we take a time apart to return to what some call the cave of the heart and the Sufis call the secret heart of hearts, feeling our way, in community, toward the root of the root of our own self. Specific teachings and experiential processes will emerge in response to the group inquiry/wisdom arising as we sit together. These will include for sure periods of silence and reflection, and may likely also include presentations (on topics such as nursing/healthcare-giving as spiritual practice, aspects of the Perennial Wisdom, and discernment) and a variety of experiences and processes , including self-inquiry, conversations of the heart, group dialogue, writing exercises, practices/meditations from several of the world’s spiritual traditions, sacred chant, and poetry from the some of the world’s great mystics, like Rumi, Hafiz, St. Julian of Norwich, Mary Oliver and others.

All nurses and healthcare professionals/healers are welcome, those with faith traditions and long-established spiritual practices, and those with neither. We all need time in the cave of the heart.

The soul hears a call from within:
how long will you wander around?
Come back to your true home.
Break from this exile! Come home!
We are weary of this separation! Make a move!”Rumi

About Janet F. Quinn, PhD, RN, FAAN

I have been engaged with healing—pondering, practicing, researching, teaching, writing, sharing and living—for over three decades. I’m an international speaker, consultant, and retreat and workshop facilitator in several content areas, including: Caring and Healing; The Way of the Healer; InterSpirituality and the Perennial Wisdom; Integrative/Holistic Nursing; Creating Habitats for Healing; and Spirituality and Healing.

I’m also a long-time student and practitioner of the inner/spiritual life. I am scheduled to be on a 40-day silent retreat with my Sufi guide in the weeks before our time together, which will no doubt influence the topics and processes I offer. I’ve been in private practice for two decades as a Spiritual Director/Guide, where I bring an InterSpiritual perspective, grounded in the Perennial Wisdom, to companion people from all faith traditions or none on the spiritual journey. My book of affirmations and reflections for women entitled I am a Woman Finding My Voice was published in 1999 and is still in print!

I’m a Faculty Associate in the Watson Caring Science Institute and adjunct faculty at the University of Arizona and the University of Colorado Colleges of Nursing. For more information, please see my websites at www.janetquinn.com or www.janetquinnsoulfriend.com.
