Marialena Murphy, MSN, MHA, RN, NEA-BC, CNOR is nurse leader, author, and mentor. She has held nurse executive roles in a variety of inpatient and ambulatory patient care settings and is currently a Nurse Administrator at the Mayo Clinic Arizona. Responsibilities include clinical and administrative leadership responsibility for 3 acute care Medical/Surgical inpatient departments, and the ambulatory surgical specialty departments for Orthopedics, Neurosciences, ENT, Plastics, and Gynecology. In addition, she is the Nurse Administrator liaison for Patient Experience for the department of nursing at Mayo Clinic Arizona.
Marialena has used a relationship based model for communication, leadership and mentoring to implement innovative programs to promote high quality care, and caring patient environments. Her vision and passion for mentoring focuses on a holistic patient centered, caring model at the interpersonal and operational levels that has positively impacted patient outcomes as well as staff and physician satisfaction. She has promoted the integration of Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring® in the development of policies and procedures, and in the mentoring of director and manager leadership development.
Marialena completed the Watson Caring Science Institute® (WCSI) Caritas Coach Educational Program, and became a WCSI Faculty Associate. She then became a HeartMath® Master Trainer for Scottsdale Healthcare and trained over 600 staff members and leaders on Transforming Stress and Revitalizing Care. Her work has led to poster and podium presentations, an article in the AORN Journal, book chapter in Perioperative Services – Administration, Resource Management and Patient Care, and ongoing teaching workshops and nurse mentoring.
Marialena is a mentor in the Mayo Clinic Leadership Foundations courses, works as a consultant for Capstone Leadership Solutions in delivering the Managing and Leading for Success Workshops in partnership with the Arizona Nurses Association. Marialena also works as an independent consultant for speaking engagements on a variety of topics and has provided expert opinions and consultation on medical/legal cases for attorney offices in the state of Arizona.
Marialena is active in the nursing profession and holds professional memberships in the American Nurses Association (ANA), Arizona Nurses Association (AzNA), American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE), American college of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) and the Arizona Organization of Nurse Leaders (AzONL), and the where she is also a board member/treasurer.
Marialena has earned her Associate of Arts degree in Nursing, and Associate in General Education, her Bachelor of Science degree in Health Sciences Management, Her Master of Science degree in Health Services Administration and her Master of Science in Nursing Education. She is certified as a Nurse in the Operating Room (CNOR), and Board Certified as a Nurse Executive Advanced (NEA-BC).
