Watson Caring Science Institute Caritas Coach®
  Caritas Colleague

My name is Sandra Mohsan. I am a retired clinical nurse with 41 years of experience, including 22 years as a Telehealth Advice Charge Nurse at Northern Kaiser Permanente. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, along with certifications in public health, telehealth, and quality management. I am also a Caritas Coach. My professional affiliations include The Nursing Way and Watson Caring Institute, and I have volunteered for CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) and the American Red Cross.

In 2015, my colleague Pamela Dayon introduced me to Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring. Together, we worked to advance Caring Science throughout Kaiser Permanente. Now that I am retired, I focus on self-care, mentoring others, storytelling, poetry, and writing. My first book, Caregiver’s Poetic Journal, explores the healing potential of journaling. I also create children’s stories about illness and injury, weaving in Watson’s 10 Caritas Processes. The Dr. Molly on the Farm series debuts with “Dr. Molly and the Rooster with a Cough-A-Doodle Doo” which tells the story of a rooster newly diagnosed with asthma and highlights the value of loving kindness.

Caritas continues to expand within the three Northern California Kaiser Call Centers. With collaboration from CCEP, more nurses are being trained as Caritas Coaches in pursuit of having one in every department. The call center’s Caritas committee—which meets three times a year and includes managers and coaches—guides this mission. Caring Science is regularly highlighted in web news, team training sessions, and onboarding materials. The overarching goal is to enhance nurse wellbeing, foster authentic patient connections, improve quality metrics, and strengthen team bonds—especially important as remote work becomes more prevalent.

By teaching and sharing our experiences, we demonstrate how Caring Science encourages meaningful relationships, supportive workplaces, and healing through transpersonal presence. A single caring moment can leave a lasting impression, spreading positivity across the globe.
