FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June, 2025 — Deerfield Beach, FL / Wuhan, China – Watson Caring Science Institute (WCSI), led by Dr. Jean Watson, proudly announces that Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, HUST (WHUH) has been named the newest formal Global Caring Science Affiliate of WCSI. This esteemed designation honors WHUH’s deep commitment to integrating Watson’s Human Caring Theory and the 10 Caritas Processes® into its organizational culture and practices.
This announcement marks a significant milestone in WHUH’s journey toward compassionate, theory-based care, and it highlights their vital role in shaping the future of healthcare both in China and around the globe.
Under the leadership of Dr. Yilan Liu, Director of Nursing, WHUH has been working with Watson’s Caring Science theory for many years, hosting Dr. Watson’s visit in Wuhan, China in 2012, and presenting at the 24th International Caritas Consortium, hosted by Kaiser Permanente in San Francisco in 2019.
“Now the time arrives for human caring science standards in nursing to be established at the international level to ensure uniformity of caring practices in the world,” said Dr. Liu. “It is our wish to lead, organize and support the development and utilization of Watson’s Caring Science standards in China in concert with WCSI.”
Dr. Liu’s leadership in China includes the development of a model for nursing practice based on Watson’s Theory of Human Caring at Union Hospital in Wuhan—one that has been recognized and disseminated as a national exemplar for nursing care throughout China.
WCSI Founder/Director Dr. Jean Watson said “WHUH exemplifies a holistic and authentic approach to compassionate care. We are honored to welcome WHUH as a Global Caring Science Affiliate. Their dedication to healing with love aligns deeply with the heart of Watson’s Caring Science.”
This partnership marks a significant milestone in the global expansion of Caring Science, reflecting a shared vision between WHUH and WCSI to elevate healthcare through love, compassion, and human connection. As WHUH joins a distinguished global community of Caring Science Affiliates, it reinforces a growing international movement to humanize healthcare, advance nursing practice, and cultivate healing environments for all. Together, WHUH and WCSI are lighting the way toward a more caring and unified world.
