My Story

I entered the nursing profession with encouragement from relatives who also work in healthcare. As a student, I immediately noted that gentleness and kindness goes a long way in connecting with patients and helping them through their illness. When I finished nursing school I was given a prayer card that read, “Lord, let me not lose sight of why I became a nurse…to be an instrument of your healing.” It resonated deeply with me and I have chosen to keep to it. I am committed and goal-oriented, so I worked hard, strived to do well, and sought ways to develop my nursing skills further. I realized the work of a nurse can be truly intense and demanding physically, mentally, and even emotionally. However, even through the hecticness and sometimes chaos of work, my patients and coworkers share that they feel calmer, supported, and listened when I am present. When asked how I do that, I find it hard to explain other than it’s just is.

It so happens that I do work in a WCSI-affiliated healthcare organization whose mission is to provide spiritually-centered, holistic care. I learned more about Theory of Human Caring and Caring Science after attending a holistic nursing course offered at the hospital. I met colleagues who I felt emanated genuine kindness and compassion from their being. Something about them – what they do, how they are – inspired me. It motivated me to pursue deeper learning as a holistic/Caritas nurse. I joined the Integrated Healing Arts Academy by the BirchTree Center for Healthcare Transformation, acquired holistic nursing board certification, then eventually completed the WCSI Caritas Coach Education Program®. Throughout this journey of growth and learning, I realized that the concepts of Caring Science – lovingkindness, equanimity, transpersonal moments, the Caritas ProcessesⓇ – brought sense, clarity and direction to my perspective and life experiences as a nurse and as a person. I developed a philosophy as an educator to infuse Caring Science in how I connect with and teach patients, nurses and other healthcare professionals. I consider this my ongoing contribution in advancing nursing as a genuinely caring-healing profession.

Contributions to the Legacy of Caring Science

As I became more enlightened to the nature of caring and healing relationships through the lens of Caring Science, it became clear that I must share that growth and learning to others. I developed a philosophy as an educator to infuse Caring Science in how I connect with and teach patients, nurses and other healthcare professionals. I have conducted several poster and speaking presentations on holistic nursing practice, transformational leadership, self-care & resilience, the Caritas Processes®, mandala meditation, and mindfulness. Most recently, I am preparing to be a facilitator of the Holistic Nursing Intensive program in my healthcare institution focusing on the Theory of Human Caring and Unitary Caring Science. I have also started as a faculty in the WCSI Caritas Coach Education Program which further opens up a wider opportunity for me to teach/coach others.
